Introduction to Unit about Fairy Tales.
Traditional
In this unit we use the Fairy Tale -
Little Red Riding Hood which is a well known fairytale that dates from
the time before
stories were written down. Like Fables,
Fairy Tales were written to teach a lesson. In Fairy tales, people play
the main
parts and sometimes animals are included
to show the weaknesses in humans. Because the traditional telling of fairy
tales
point out human weaknesses and strengths,
they have lasted for centuries. Many people have enjoyed them and learned
their lessons.
| Traditional ending:
The story ends happily with Red Riding Hood receiving a scare but
learning a valuable lesson as a result of her terrible experience.
Unfortunately as a result of Red Riding Hood disobeying her mother
by stopping in the woods and talking to a stranger her grandmother
is killed. The moral of the story is about Stranger Danger and consequences
for disobeying orders. |
Fractured Tale
The interests and beliefs of readers
influence how stories are read. If the story of Little Red Riding Hood
is told by the wolf, it is
likely to be read differently. So twisted
tales or fractured fairy tales, add a different point of view. In most
cases the twist
or fracture is humorous and usually ends
quite differently. Sometimes writers like to combine different characters
from various
tales to make them even more fractured
and with hilarious results. In the case of Little Red Riding Hood, if
the wolf is
killed by Red Riding Hood then the fracture
departs from the traditional role, thus enabling Red Riding Hood to be
more
in control of the situation.
|
Fractured ending: The
story ending happily with Red Riding Hood shown as a person who
is capable of looking after herself. As for the wolf, because of
his behaviour which makes it unsafe for females to on their own,
in the case of Grandma, he suffers at the hands of a very capable
and confident young female who is able to protect herself from dangers.
